Gyms are a uniquely difficult photography environment: mirrored walls that reflect your camera back at you, tight spaces between equipment, and subjects whose muscle definition can look flattering or flat depending entirely on how far away you shoot from. Getting the distance right solves most of these problems before you even touch a setting.
The Mirror Reflection Problem
Most commercial and home gyms have at least one full mirrored wall, and it is often directly opposite the exact spot where the best lifting or workout angle would otherwise be. Shooting from too close to a mirror, or at certain angles, puts the camera and photographer directly into the reflection, ruining the shot.

The reflection angle equals the incidence angle, so positioning at an oblique angle to the mirror, rather than directly facing it, keeps the camera out of frame.
Position roughly 30 to 45 degrees off the mirror's perpendicular axis, rather than shooting straight into it.
Alternatively, position with your back close to or against a wall perpendicular to the mirror, so the mirror reflects that wall rather than you.
Distance interacts with this problem directly. A close working distance in a small mirrored room gives you very little room to find an angle that avoids the reflection. Why Muscle Definition Photographs Better from a Distance
This surprises many people new to fitness photography: shooting a physique subject too close, with a wide-angle lens, tends to flatten and distort muscle definition rather than emphasise it, for the same perspective reasons covered in our portrait distance guide. A wide lens at close range exaggerates whatever part of the body is nearest the camera while compressing everything further away, which can make a torso look oddly proportioned rather than showing genuine muscular definition and symmetry.
Too Close: 1m with a 35mm Lens
Nearest muscle group (often the chest or shoulder closest to camera) appears exaggerated. Body proportions read as distorted rather than powerful. Perspective competes with the subject rather than flattering it.
Correct: 3m with an 85mm Lens
Body proportions render naturally. Muscle definition reads as genuine shape and shadow rather than perspective exaggeration. Background compresses attractively, isolating the subject from gym clutter.
The same 85mm to 135mm range that flatters human faces in portraiture also flatters the human body in fitness photography, for the same underlying reason: greater distance reduces the relative difference between the near and far points of a three-dimensional subject, producing more natural, undistorted proportions.
Lifting and Action Shots: Distance for Safety and Framing
Photographing an active lift, a barbell squat, a deadlift, an Olympic lift, requires enough distance to capture the full range of motion without being in the lifter's immediate space, both for safety and to avoid distracting them during a heavy or technical lift.
- Standing lifts (deadlift, squat): position 3 to 5 metres to the side, with enough distance that a barbell drop or loss of balance does not put you at risk, while still filling the frame with an 85mm to 135mm lens
- Olympic lifts (clean and jerk, snatch): position further back, 4 to 6 metres, since these lifts involve the bar and lifter moving through a larger vertical range and occasionally require bailing the weight, which needs clearance
- Bodyweight and plyometric movements: box jumps, burpees, similar explosive movements benefit from a slightly elevated or angled position at 3 to 5 metres to show the full movement arc
💡 Never Position Directly Behind a Lifter During a Heavy Lift
For safety, avoid positioning directly behind or in the fall path of a barbell during heavy squats, deadlifts, or overhead lifts. Shoot from the side at a slight angle, which also happens to be the more flattering angle for showing lifting form, giving you both a safety benefit and a better shot simultaneously.
Small Space Gyms and Home Gym Photography
Home gyms and small commercial studios often do not offer the 3 to 5 metre working distances that larger gyms allow. In these confined spaces, the standard approach is to use a wider lens (24mm to 35mm) at a closer distance, accepting some perspective distortion as a tradeoff for fitting the shot at all, or to shoot from a corner diagonal to maximise the available working distance within the room.

Depth of Field Considerations for Gym Environments
Gyms are visually busy, cables, weight racks, other members, mirrors, and a wide aperture to blur that background out is often desirable. At the working distances recommended above (2 to 5 metres with an 85mm to 135mm lens), a moderate aperture of f/2.8 to f/4 produces attractive subject separation from a cluttered gym background without needing to go to the widest possible aperture, which would risk missing focus on a moving subject during a lift.
