Pet Photography: The Right Distance for Animals
Almost every bad pet photo has the same cause: a phone or wide-angle lens held too close to a dog's face, stretching the nose forward and shrinking the ears and eyes into the background. The fix is distance, not a better camera. Here is exactly how far to stand for every common pet photography situation.
The Wide-Angle Nose Problem
Phone cameras and wide-angle lenses have a focal length equivalent to roughly 24 to 28mm. At the close range most people photograph pets from, often under a metre, this focal length exaggerates the size of whatever is closest to the lens relative to what is further away. On a dog, that means the nose, which extends forward from the rest of the head, appears disproportionately large while the ears and back of the skull shrink and recede.

The 85mm Rule for Pet Portraits
Just as with human portraiture, an 85mm lens on full frame shot from roughly 2 to 3 metres produces the most naturally proportioned face shots for medium and large dogs. Small Pets Need Magnification, Not Proximity
Rabbits, guinea pigs, hamsters, and other small animals present the opposite challenge to dogs. Because they are small, the instinct is to get very close, which reintroduces the same distortion problem at an even smaller scale, since these animals often have short, rounded faces where any close-range distortion is highly visible in whisker length and nose shape.
The better solution is a moderate telephoto or macro lens, like a 100mm macro, used from 0.5 to 1 metre. If you already own one for other purposes, it is worth trying for hamsters, rabbits, and similar small animals.
Distance and Animal Behaviour

Many animals, cats especially, are uncomfortable with a lens pointed directly at their face from very close range and will turn away, flatten their ears, or move out of frame. Eye Level Changes Everything
Distance determines proportions, but camera height determines perspective and emotional connection. Photographing a dog or cat from human standing height, looking down at the animal, is one of the most common amateur pet photography mistakes, alongside shooting too close. Getting down to the animal's eye level, even if it means lying on the ground, produces a dramatically more engaging and professional-looking result regardless of the distance and lens used.
Combine the correct working distance from the tables above with eye-level camera height, and even a modest kit lens will produce noticeably better pet portraits than a wide-angle phone shot from standing height.
Action and Movement Distances
Photographing a dog running, jumping, or playing fetch requires a different distance calculation entirely, driven by safety and framing rather than distortion avoidance. A dog running toward the camera at speed needs enough distance for you to react and reframe as it approaches, and enough focal length reach to fill the frame from a safe distance rather than being directly in its running path.
- Running toward camera: Position 8 to 15 metres from the starting point with a 135mm to 300mm lens, giving you time to track focus as the dog closes distance
